CHARACTERISTICS OF USE OF A HELICAL PUMP

The helical pump is often used in situations where it is necessary to pump a viscous, sedimented or solids-containing liquid. Moreover, it is also suitable for transferring liquids with high temperatures or that may be sensitive to shear. The fluid transport occurs without agitation or crushing and, therefore, does not alter its characteristics. The cavities have the linear length of one step of the stator and twice the step of the rotor, which is called a stage. The volume of the cavity with the rotor's rpm generates the pump's flow rate. The sum of the stages generates the maximum working pressure, which increases linearly from the inlet to the outlet. The flow rate is directly proportional to the pump's rotation. That is, by increasing or decreasing the motor's rotation, the flow rate also increases or decreases. However, if we set the maximum rotation and the required flow rate is not reached, one should opt for a larger-sized pump, using the calculation below, in which the following measures also determine the pump's flow rate:

Some situations in which a helical pump can be chosen include:

  1. Food industry: The helical pump can be used to transport viscous foods such as sauces, purees, pastes, or foods with solids in suspension.

  2. Chemical industry: The helical pump is ideal for transferring viscous liquids such as polymers, resins, paints, or adhesives.

  3. Agriculture: It can be used to transfer agricultural liquids such as fertilizers, pesticides, or viscous substances used in feed production.

  4. Water and sewage treatment: The helical pump can be used to transfer sludge or slurry produced in water purification processes or sewage treatment.

  5. Mining industry: The helical pump can be used to transfer slurry materials such as ore pulps or mining waste.

It is important to consider the characteristics of the liquid to be pumped, such as viscosity, presence of solids in suspension, temperature, and chemical properties before choosing a helical pump. Additionally, the desired flow, required pressure, and energy efficiency of the pump must be taken into account.
